Alexandru Nemoianu: „An Answer to George Enache“
In its issue of February 11, 2008, the review “Tabor” published a rather long essay of George Enache, “Politica si Religie in primele decenii ale războiului rece. Problema diasporei ortodoxe romaneşti din occident” (Politics and religion in the first decades of the cold war. The problem of the Romanian Diaspora in the west.)
Each historical contribution, done in good faith, is commendable but when, under disguise of a historical restitution, clear political goals are hidden, such materials should be vigorously denounced.
It is hard to say what George Enache’s motivations were, but as a historical contribution, the conclusions of his essays are, to put it very mildly, way off the mark.
First of all, George Enache’s essay and its conclusions are supported by very thin, almost pathetic, documentation. Basically, three previously published sources are used and no direct, primary sources. Advancing very audacious conclusions based on such thin documentation is a very risky affair.
Secondly, the author treats the “Romanians” in the West (another very dubious and confusing definition) as a lump, as the same matter. Nothing could be farther from the truth!
The Romanian political refugees that settled in the free countries of Europe were a totally different thing from the Romanian-Americans who were (and are) part of the American people.
Thirdly, George Enache considers as equal political maneuvering what the nefarious communist regime did and what the free countries of the world did. Such a conclusion cannot be considered otherwise than in bad faith!
The communist regimes were bestial enterprises, and the regimes of the Free World were human. There is absolutely no point in comparing one with the other, and if someone dares to do this, he should be ashamed.
But when George Enache addressed the situation of Romanian-American Orthodoxy, his conclusions, if not outrageous, could be considered just hilarious.
George Enache, directly and indirectly, considers that the USA judicial system which sustained the Romanian-Americans (very derogatorily called by the same author as “the council of Truta”!) was politically motivated and basically “wronged” the “Romanian Church.”
George Enache continues on the same tone on and on and on.
It is really sad that such sort of comments as those of George Enache are circulated and even worse, considered “historical essays.”
